On her career as a math librarian:
“I was raised by a mathematician, but when I started as a math librarian, I didn’t have the background I needed to purchase all of books for the research side of the department. The wonderful Math Department representative, Peter Gilkey, did a terrific job of giving me a crash course and a list of topics that were important to track on for the department. I’ve learned so much over the years, and mathematicians are so helpful. I’ve appreciated their generosity and patience at every turn.”
About the Math Library:
“We now offer drop-in homework help for introductory math classes, [and] we’ve been busier than ever. And, while we have a large following of undergraduates taking those required classes, we’ve also created an intellectual community of learning beyond that which is exciting to see. More advanced undergraduate students in the department end up hanging out in the Reading Room too – partly because they know they’ll find others there. Groups of student end up working on math and discussing homework with classmates. It’s wonderfully exciting and lively.”
A favorite moment as a math librarian:
“Hiring undergraduates to help patrons with homework, and getting to work with a terrific diverse group of incredibly dedicated students. That they have become a support network for each other has been an unexpected surprise.”
