Celebrate the 125th at JMM

The American Mathematical Society sponsored a WiFi Hotspot at the 2013 Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego, January 9–12 as another way to carry on the tradition of connecting mathematicians.

On Friday January 11, students from the AMS Grad Student Blog helped organize a flash mob outside of the main exhibit hall. Watch the video to see the group form and attempt to untangle a "flash knot."

AMS 125th Anniversary Gala

at the AMS 125th Gala

To launch the year-long festivities celebrating the Society's 125th Anniversary, the AMS invited its members and friends to a celebratory dinner on Saturday, January 12. Gourmet food stations and music complemented the special program. The gala was held this year in place of the traditional banquet.

See videos from the gala of Ron Stern, Chairman of the AMS Board of Trustees, recognizing President Eric M.Friedlander, who is nearing the end of his term, and Secretary Robert J. Daverman, who is also nearing the end of his service. Finally, AMS founder Thomas Fiske comes out of retirement to make an appearance.

The history of mathematics during the past 125 years is documented in AMS books, in the vast archive of AMS research journals, in Notices and Bulletin of the AMS, and in reviews on MathSciNet®. The AMS Prizes & Awards section of the AMS website is a wonderful tribute to the important contributions of eminent mathematicians from around the world. AMS 125 Looking Forward

The AMS continues to advance the profession through travel grants, new prizes/awards, upcoming AMS sectional, international, and national meetings, and programs that bring young mathematicians into the pipeline and help early-career mathematicians.

The AMS thanks all its members, leaders, staff and volunteers, and looks forward to more milestones over the next 125 years!
